35 mm Film

They still made movies in 35 mm back then, and apart from a few backscreen shots of Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in the biplane, they don't really go in for special effects. What you see is what you get, which means they shot it all on film, and used big screen ratios to soak up every bit of that African landscape.
