- Daddy is considering getting a loan from the government to plant a new wheat crop, but Ma isn't so sure he's being realistic. When she tries to tell him this, he gets mad and goes out to the barn.
- Billie Jo asks Ma why Daddy still has hope that things will turn around. Ma says that farming is the only thing he knows, and even if it didn't rain at all, he would still have to hope.
