Persepolis sounds pretty exotic, huh? We would like to go to there.
Unfortunately we can't. Well, we can, but it's just not the same as it used to be. Persepolis is the ancient capital of Iran, but it lies in ruins now. Chapter 4 of Persepolis is also called "Persepolis." It's a short chapter—only 40 panels—but tons of stuff happens in it: Marji learns about how her grandmother was super-poor back in her day (like, Great Depression Iran-style poor), she fears her father is dead, and her parents talk about all sorts of politics that she can't understand at such a young age.
This chapter ends with Marjane reading to learn. Perhaps she has realized that you have to learn about the past in order to make a good future. Or maybe she's secretly got travel brochures tucked into all those books because she wants to go to Persepolis too. Who knows?
