MoreMarquis de La Mole Timeline and Summary
- The Marquis shows up in Verrières early in the book during a foreign kind's visit to France. He seems like just another rich French guy, and the book doesn't focus on him much.
- The Marquis returns when he asks Father Pirard (Julien Sorel's mentor) to become his personal assistant. Pirard declines but asks if Julien can go in his place. The Marquis accepts.
- The Marquis brings Julien to Paris and shows him the upper class world. He takes him to balls and the opera and tells him to closely observe people's mannerisms.
- The Marquis brings Julien in on a secret scheme to bring back the monarchy to France. He takes Julien to a secret meeting and gets him to memorize a letter that a bunch of men have drafted for a foreign duke. He then asks Julien to deliver the message in secret.
- The Marquis blows a gasket when he learns that his daughter is pregnant with Julien's child and that she plans on marrying him. He threatens to throw them both out, but eventually relents and gives Julien the property, status, and money he needs to be worthy of his daughter.
- The Marquis withdraws his support for his daughter's marriage when he receives a letter from Madame de Rênal saying that Julien is only marrying Mathilde for her money.
