Character Analysis
The Marquis de La Mole is, in short, Julien Sorel's meal ticket. He's also Julien's ticket into upper-class French society. When Julien first learns that he's gotten a job with the Marquis, he expects the man to be extremely stuck up. But he's surprised to find that the Marquis:
[…] was so courteous that Julien was hard put to recognize him. He was no longer the high and mighty lord of Upper Bray, who carried himself so haughtily. (2.2.5)
In fact, the Marquis is as good to Julien as you could ever expect him to be.
In addition to his politeness, the Marquis is also an enterprising dude who likes to get stuff done. As the narrator tells us,
He's an active man who thinks of everything, who likes to do things rather than order that they be done by others. (2.2.11)
In other words, he ain't the kind of rich dude who just sits around telling people to do stuff. He gets off his butt and does it himself. That said, he also believes that "Entertainment is essential […] That's life's only reality" (2.7.7).
This basically means that the Marquis is just as bored as any other rich person in French society. In fact, that's why he hires Julien in the first place; Julien's peasant manners are a breath of fresh air in the stale world of upper class France.
