R.U.R. takes a rather dim view of technology and modernization. Technological progress is supposed to solve all of everyone's problems and end want and care. But instead, it destroys all human life everywhere. So that's the downside. But, on the other hand, humans actually seem able to create life. By the end of the play, it looks like Domin and Gall and the rest have created human souls through technological means. Humans have replaced God, or taken the place of God. R.U.R. isn't sure whether it thinks that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Questions About Technology and Modernization
- Why does Domin want technological progress? Why do the Rossums? Are any of these presented as good reasons?
- Is making robots like building a car? Or is it more like alchemy or magic?
- Is R.U.R. a retelling of Frankenstein? Why or why not?
