Sabriel's Father (The Abhorsen) Timeline and Summary

At some point in the past, possibly two hundred years before the story begins (although this is unclear), an Abhorsen freezes Touchstone onto the prow of a ship in Holehallow. Whether it was another Abhorsen or Sabriel's father is not known, although it's hinted that it may be Sabriel's father. Do the Abhorsen live much longer than ordinary humans? Also unknown.
Sabriel's dad saves the newborn Sabriel from Kerrigor. He sends Sabriel to live in Ancelstierre as soon as she is old enough to go to boarding school.
He continues to serve as Abhorsen in the Old Kingdom until an encounter with Kerrigor traps his body in the capital city, while his spirit is deep in Death. He remains trapped until Sabriel comes to rescue him some months later.
When he is initially trapped, he manages to send the tools of his trade, the Necromantic bells and enchanted sword, to Sabriel via magical courier.
When Sabriel finds him in Death, he reveals that he can only come back to Life for a brief time, since he's been trapped in Death too long to live again.
He dies in battle with Kerrigor when he rings the bell Astarael, which banishes all who hear it deep into Death, including the bell-ringer.
