• Sabriel's mom dies in childbirth, and Sabriel herself dies shortly after birth, but her father, the Abhorsen, rescues her from a monster in Death and brings her back to life.
• At eighteen, she's a top student at Wyverley College when her father goes missing. Sabriel leaves immediately for the Old Kingdom to find him, embarking on this journey alone.
• Once in the Old Kingdom, Sabriel is pursued by an evil creature from Death called a Mordicant. She calls on a spirit guide in the form of her deceased mom to find a way to her father's old house. Along the way, she's nearly killed several times and has to call upon magic she hasn't really used much before.
• At the Abhorsen's house, she meets Mogget and discovers that she's fated to step into the role of Abhorsen herself, since her father is missing. Once again she escapes the Mordicant, this time with Mogget by her side.
• After a bad plane crash, Mogget, free of his feline form, almost kills Sabriel, but she keeps her head enough to figure out how to trap him back into the body of a cat.
• Sabriel meets romantic interest Touchstone when she frees him from the prow of a ship, where he's been frozen for the past 200 years.
• Sabriel rids a town of a parasitic creature of Death and takes a boat to the capital city with Touchstone and Mogget.
• At the capital city, Sabriel finds her father in an underground reservoir, where Kerrigor arrives to attack them. Sabriel's father temporarily drives Kerrigor away so that Sabriel and Touchstone can escape.
• Sabriel and Touchstone return to the Wall and then to Ancelstierre, bringing Colonel Horyse and his troops with them to destroy Kerrigor's body.
• In the final confrontation with Kerrigor at Wyverley College, Sabriel destroys Kerrigor's body and traps his spirit and Mogget's spirit in cat form, but dies in the process.
• Sabriel's Abhorsen ancestors send her back to the realm of the living.
