- One day, the children and Sarah stand on the porch and watch Jacob head out with the neighbors to plow the cornfield.
- The neighbor's wife, Maggie—who also found her husband through a newspaper ad—comes over with her daughters.
- The two women sit on the porch together and talk about their experiences. Anna can hear them discussing how they both miss where they come from.
- Maggie tells her that Sarah will always miss things from home and that she understands her loneliness. Then she gives Sarah some plants so she can grow a garden.
- When they leave, Maggie tells Sarah to drive the wagon over to her house sometime and she'll give her more plants. Sarah explains that she doesn't know how to drive a wagon, but everyone jumps in to say they'll teach her.
- Then Sarah tells them that they're going to name the chickens that Maggie and her family gave them—they're not going to kill and eat them.
- Jacob comes into the house and brings Sarah some roses. How romantic.
