Sarek

The mentor character is the (usually old) guy or gal who gives the hero the information he needs to quest, maybe a magic artifact or two, and then sends him on his way to face the dangers alone.

Because the mentor sure isn't going to do it; questing is dangerous work.

Sound like anybody from The Search for Spock? Yep, Sarek. Sarek is both Spock's father and the Vulcan ambassador on the Federation Council. He's also the mentor character. He informs Kirk about his son's peril, teaches him about katra, and sends him on the quest to bring Spock and his katra back to Vulcan.
