- Prabaker and Johnny Cigar wake up Lin at 2:00 AM and tell him that a man is bleeding and needs his help.
- The guy was involved in a gang fight and doesn't want to go to the hospital.
- Although he's never done so before, Lin magically figures out how to stitch up the poor guy's wound. (The next thing you know dude'll be opening an Etsy shop.)
- As soon as he finishes up, amidst the neighbors' commentary on his bowel movements for the past few weeks (gross), Prabaker comes back with a fresh emergency.
- Prabu tells Lin that his friend is in jail and needs his help. He leads him to the police station and they pay off a cop to let them in.
- The "friend" turns out to be Kano, the bear that Lin hugged in the slum, who is now behind bars like a common criminal.
- Accompanying Kano are his blue trainers. They had fought some other bear trainers for beating their bear, and the brawl got the police's attention.
- Lin tries to bribe the guard to let the guys out, but he won't.
- The blue men aren't worried about themselves. They ask Lin to take care of Kano for them. The bear is confined with no bail, too, though.
- So Lin bribes the guards to let the bear handlers into the same cell as Kano. Aw, sweet.
- Prabu and Lin take a cab back to the slum.
- Lin eats breakfast with Qasim Ali and then goes to visit Karla.
- She isn't home, though, so he goes to Khaderbhai's.
- Khaderbhai asks Lin to take in and teach English to his nephew, a little boy named Tariq, for the next few months. Tariq will shadow Lin to learn his language.
- Lin is nervous about the responsibility, but they agree on a 48-hour test run.
- Tariq comes in and they go out into the street.
- When they hear the Muslim call to prayer from a mosque nearby, Tariq breaks free and runs into the building.
- Since he is not Muslim, Lin is worried about following Tariq in and making a scene, so he waits.
- Tariq emerges after a few minutes, and Lin gives him a talking-to. They make friends.
