- Nazeer has saved Lin's life in the attack. He wakes up in a hospital in Pakistan. Lin learns that they were attacked by friendly fire. When the mix-up was cleared up, their attackers turned into their rescuers.
- Nazeer, Mahmoud, and Lin, the survivors, go back to Bombay by train.
- Back home, Lin realizes that most people don't know about Khaderbhai's death, and he doesn't want to be the one to tell them.
- He buys some rupees from one of Khader's currency guys and goes on a shopping spree for new clothes. Then he heads to Leopold's and sees Didier and Kavita.
- Lin tells Didier that Khader is dead. Didier is shocked by the news. Then, also shocking, Lin
- announces that he is going to see Madame Zhou. Didier tells him that she was attacked last week
- by an angry mob but that she's still alive. When he can't convince Lin to stay away, Didier decides to accompany him.
