Delbert Grady and Family

Character Analysis

Delbert Grady was the first caretaker at the Overlook under Ullman's management, in the winter of 1970-71. Like Jack, he was an alcoholic. Also like Jack, he tries to murder his family – a wife and two young daughters. Unlike Jack, he succeeds. Grady's ghost appears to Jack. Like the woman in 217, Grady seems has some power over earthly objects, since he unlocks the pantry and lets Jack out so Jack can "punish" Wendy and Danny. Perhaps surprisingly, Grady's wife and daughters don't participate in the haunting of the Torrances.
