Character Role Analysis

Attean

Though Attean ultimately becomes Matt's best buddy for life, things start out pretty rocky between these two. Attean doesn't hide his distaste for his mandatory white-boy hangouts, and Matt wishes he would change his mind a lot sooner than he does. Matt is lonely in the woods, and Attean doesn't do much to help change that situation for a while.

Ben

When Ben snags that rifle, he also snatches much of Matt's confidence in survival. And since survival is pretty much Matt's only goal, this means Ben really messes things up for our main character. Luckily for Matt Ben doesn't hang around long. Otherwise who knows how much more damage he might have caused.

Nature

Between the bees and the bear, nature takes its fair share of shots at Matt. Matt is young and inexperienced when it comes to living alone in the woods, and nature couldn't care less. Luckily for Matt, Attean eventually warms up to him and helps diminish the threat that nature poses by teaching him all sorts of super useful survival skills.
