Section 39 Summary

Get out the microscope, because we’re going through this poem line-by-line.

  • Whitman praises Native Americans in this section.
  • He calls them "savages" (eek!), but he means it in a positive way, believe it or not.
  • He thinks the Native Americans have more freedom, and everyone wants to be around them.
  • Still, it's a little uncomfortable when he calls them "lawless," simple," and "naïve." He's indulging a bit in the myth of the Noble Savage.
