Dr. Constance Petersen (Ingrid Bergman)’s Timeline and Summary
- Constance, a psychiatrist at Green Meadows, meets Dr. Edwardes, the new administrator replacing Dr. Murchison.
- Edwardes and Constance fall in love—whoosh—just like that.
- Constance figures out that Edwardes isn't Edwardes; he's an impostor.
- But she still loves him, because true love is like that.
- "Edwardes" thinks he must have killed the real Edwardes and, consumed with guilt, he skedaddles.
- Constance follows him to New York. She says she'll cure him.
- The police have been notified that Edwardes is dead and are seeking the impostor.
- On the run from the police, Constance and her patient (now called "John Brown") go to the upstate New York home of Dr. Brulov, Constance's old teacher.
- Brulov and Constance analyze "Edwardes" together.
- They figure out that he was traumatized while with the real Edwardes on a skiing trip.
- Brown and Constance go to the site of the skiing accident, and Brown recalls seeing Edwardes topple over a ledge.
- Brown remembers his name is really Ballantyne. Also, he remembers he accidentally caused his brother's death when they were children. Thus all the repressed guilt.
- The police find Edwardes' body… but, oops, it turns out he was shot. Ballantyne is arrested and thrown in jail.
- Constance is upset, as you'd imagine. She goes back to Green Manors.
- There, Dr. Murchison lets slip a crucial detail, which ends up revealing that he was actually the murderer.
- Constance confronts him; he shoots himself.
- Ballantyne is released, he and Constance marry, and that's the end.
- There's happiness for all… except maybe for Dr. Murchison.
