Lia

Although Lia isn't a protagonist in the traditional sense (you know, growing up, sharing struggles, having a narrative arc), she's the closest thing we've got in The Spirit Catches You. She's at the center of her family's powerful struggle, and her suffering is made all the more heartbreaking by the fact that she's a child—innocent and blameless amid all of this cultural conflict and medical woe. Sounds pretty dismal, but hey—the family's presence makes for some pretty amazing growth in spite of Lia's illness. And that's what being a protagonist is all about.
