• Ty is born to his mother and father; they are unmarried and only casually seeing each other. His mom attempts to raise him before ultimately turning him over to his dad.
• Ty grows up on a farm in Australia and has a close relationship with the Aborigines who work as farmhands for his dad. He learns how to live off the land and the value of nature.
• Ty's dad gets involved in the stock market and some dangerous vices and eventually abandons him, lets his employees go, and goes off to the city.
• In his dad's absence, Ty lives off the land the way the farmhands taught him.
• Social workers find out Ty is living alone and take him away to a children's home in the city. Ty does not speak to anyone, and they assume he is mute.
• As an adult, Ty returns to Australia and to nature.
• Ty travels to London after getting a letter from his mother saying she wants him to live with her. Once he arrives, though, his search for his mom turns up nothing.
• While walking through a park in London, Ty sees Gemma playing with some flowers and begins following her throughout the next years of her life.
• Ty rescues Gemma during a confrontation with Josh, a guy from her class who won't leave her alone.

• After a confrontation with Gemma, Ty allows her to drive away with the car and see how far she can get. He rescues her a few days later.
• As Gemma begins to open up to him, Ty tells her about his childhood, as well as his plan to bring her to Australia.
• Ty wins Gemma over with a beautiful painting that is illuminated in the Australian sunset. The two fall asleep in the grass.
• Tragedy strikes when a snake bites Gemma. Ty attempts to save her using antivenom he stole from a lab, but it's been ruined by the heat.
• Although it likely means his capture, Ty agrees to take Gemma back to civilization rather than let her die.
• Gemma requests that Ty stay on the airplane with her and he agrees to, even though it seals his fate and means his arrest.
• Ty is arrested upon arrival at the airport and is held in Perth awaiting trial.
