Calixta

Calixta is as close as we get to a protagonist in this story, which has contributions from all five characters' points of view. (Intrigued? Check out "Narrator Point of View.") While each character gets to head up – or share – a section, Calixta gets the longest and meatiest section. She kind of shares this section with Alcée, but it begins with her voice and the main action takes place in her house. She also gets a big chunk of the point of view in the following section. Ultimately, we hear and learn more about her than any of the other characters. That makes her as much of a main character as we're going to get.
