Jade Timeline and Summary

  • When we first meet Jadine, we find out that she is living as a guest in Valerian Street's Caribbean house. She is the niece of Valerian's butler and cook: Sydney and Ondine Childs. She has been educated at a fancy French university (on Valerian's dime) and now works as a successful model in France.
  • Jade hangs out with Valerian's wife Margaret a lot: she goes shopping with her and keep her company. It's like a job for her.
  • One day, Margaret starts screaming, and Jade is surprised to find that an intruder (Son) has been hiding and living inside Valerian's house for nearly a week. She's even more surprised when Valerian invites the guy to stay in the house as a guest.
  • After showering and dressing, Jade sees the intruder standing in her bedroom doorway. She gets into an argument with him, which results in a guy taking hold of her and threatening to throw her out the window. While he threatens her, he takes a deep whiff of her hair and tells her that he knows what she really is. He eventually lets her go and leaves, but Jade is really unsettled by what he said.
  • One day, Son invites Jade to hang out at a nearby beach and Jade agrees. They have a good enough time, but on the way back to Valerian's house they run out of gas. Son runs off to get more, and while Jade is alone, she gets stuck in a tar swamp and nearly sinks to her death. She manages to get out of the tar, however.
  • On Christmas Day, Jade attends a dinner hosted by Valerian (her patron) and Margaret (her sort-of boss). The dinner quickly turns into a shouting match between Valerian and his servants.
  • Jade runs off to New York with Son and the two of them live happily for a few months.
  • Son keeps asking for Jade to come with him to visit the town he grew up in. Jade eventually agrees. Their stay at Eloe is terrible for her, though. She can't stop having nightmares about the women in Son's life trying to pull her into their world of Eloe.
  • Unable to stand it any longer, Jade heads back to New York without Son. When he finally shows up at their apartment again, they start fighting. Jade wants Son to be more ambitious, and Son wants Jade to stop acting like a stuck-up white girl.
  • The fighting gets so bad that Son rapes Jade in a fit of anger. Jade runs back to the Caribbean to pick up a few things before heading back to France.
  • While Jade is back at Valerian's house, her aunt Ondine scolds her for running away and not taking care of the people who sacrificed everything for her: namely Ondine and Sydney. Jade doesn't care, though. She's determined not to let anyone stand in the way of her individual success.
  • In her final scene, Jade runs into a local servant girl named Alma Estée in the Dominique airport. The girl asks for a favor, but Jade just dismisses her and doesn't even call her by her real name. Jade is a little self-involved.
