Quote #4
Look into the pewter pot
To see the world as the world's not. (25-26)
Beer, for Terence, is just a way to create a beautiful illusion. If you're drunk and think you're happy, you're just kidding yourself. Sure, he's had his fair share of drunken nights, but he realizes that the temporary pleasure of getting sloshed doesn't make life any easier. For that, you need poetry, not the "pewter pot."
Quote #5
Pints and quarts of Ludlow beer: (32)
Terence doesn't want us to think he's a lightweight, or that he doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to beer. In fact he tells us a long story about getting drunk and falling asleep in the mud. In this line, when he's talking about all the "pints and quarts" of beer he drank, he reminds us a little of a frat boy bragging about how much he drank at a party. Terence might be a poet, but dude knows how to party.
