That Evening Sun Section 2 Summary

  • The same family group takes Nancy home every night until the mother's complaints about being left alone become just too much. At that point they fix a pallet for Nancy in the kitchen.
  • One night Nancy begins wailing, and the father goes downstairs with a gun to see if Jesus is in the house. The children see Nancy halfway up the stairs, wailing and her eyes wide open, scared.
  • That night the family (except the mother!) moves Nancy's pallet into the children's room.
  • Nancy whispers in fear, and Caddy questions her. Nancy calls out for Jesus—the Christian one, the observant young Quentin says. She also says she "ain't nothing but a n*****," which "God knows."
  • Dilsey resumes cooking for the family. The two black women and Jason talk in the kitchen. Nancy tells Dilsey she can feel the presence of Jesus (her husband) nearby and says that she'd lived with him long enough to predict his actions.
  • Meanwhile Jason says Jesus is a "n*****," that he himself isn't, and then asks Nancy if she is. She replies that she is hellborn and is soon returning where she came from. Yikety yike yikes. That's scary.
