That Evening Sun Section 4 Summary

  • Jason complains that the story wasn't good, and Caddy says maybe they should go home, since their parents are probably searching for them. She heads for the door, but Nancy talks her out of it, promising more fun.
  • The group argues about whether they'll have fun, and if so, how. Quentin stays silent, just observing, as usual. Meanwhile, Nancy keeps her palm on the scalding globe of a lamp. Caddy pretty much says, "Whoa, what are you doing? That's burning your hand!" Nancy, nonplussed, slowly withdraws her hand.
  • Nancy talks the kids into playing by popping corn. She promises the complaining Jason that he can hold the handle of the popper while the corn heats in the fire. Long story short, Jason drops the popper in the fire and the popcorn is burnt, although Nancy sort of acts like it isn't, trying to sort out usable grains in her apron. At one point the black woman has her hands in the fire, leading Caddy to again ask her what the heck she is doing.
  • Caddy hears someone coming. Nancy wails again and seems to be crying.
  • The black woman begs the children to ask Mr. Jason, whom she suspects is the one coming, if she can come over and stay with them. Nancy says they'll have fun. Jason complains that he didn't have any fun, that she hurt him by getting smoke in his eyes, and says he's going to tell.
