This movie is all about The Dude. He's in every single scene. He's the one with the peed-upon rug. He's the one who has to go on the quest to figure out who has kidnapped Bunny Lebowski, and he's the one who eventually solves the mystery of her disappearance. The Big Lebowski is The Dude's story, plain and simple.
