Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge
Tom Hanks seems to have declared a monopoly on film adaptations of Dave Eggers' novels. Not only is he starring in the screen version of Eggers' A Hologram for the King, but he portrays Eamon Bailey in the film version of The Circle, too (source).
Dave Eggers doesn't seem to have had a hand in writing the screenplay for The Circle, but he definitely helped to bring the 2009 film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are to life (source).
Readers of The Circle have found more than one similarity to George Orwell's 1984, and as Betsy Morais has noted, the Circle's mantras "Secrets Are Lies," "Sharing Is Caring," and "Privacy Is Theft" bear more than a passing resemblance to the lines "War is peace," "Freedom is slavery," and "Ignorance is strength" from 1984 (source).
The Circle may be Dave Eggers' first dystopian novel, but it isn't his only experiment with an unreliable protagonist. Check out his 2014 novel Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? for another journey down that road (source).
