It's ultimate showdown time. At its heart, The Dark is Rising is really just another telling of the age-old tale about what happens when good and evil go head-to-head. In fact, the whole book can be viewed as an allegory about how these forces exist everywhere (even in rural England).
Not convinced that good vs. evil is a major theme? Even the title tells us that the Dark (a.k.a. evil) is on the rise. Throughout the book, Will and his posse have to figure out a way to destroy the evil that is already spreading all over the earth. It's out with the Dark and in with the Light, so help us all.
Questions About Good vs. Evil
- How and where does the battle between good and evil play out in this book? Why do you think they go by the Light and the Dark? Most importantly, who wins?
- When the battle is done, Merriman tells us that the dark is vanished—for now. What do you think he means by this? What does this tell you about the future of good and evil?
- It's pretty easy to divide the magical folks into good and evil. What about the non-magical humans? Do you think they are to blame for Darkness being on the rise? Why or why not?
- Is Will purely good? Why or why not? Give evidence from the text to support your claim.
Chew on This
