Character Role Analysis

Almásy

Almásy is our protagonist by default. He is the titular English patient, even if he isn't English (more on that in "What's Up with the Title?"), and half the movie takes place in his flashbacks, meaning we spend more time with him than any other character.

He may not be the noblest protagonist, but we follow his journey from being relatively cold, to learning how to love—even if he loves the wrong woman—to betraying a nation, to attempting to atone for his guilt.

Hana

Hana is our likeable protagonist. Through her we experience the post-war plot of the movie, and we like her because she is, well, she's a sweet and nurturing nurse. She's caring for Almásy, even if he's a man who might not deserve her care.

Hana just wants peace and quiet after a terrible war. Even if you haven't been through a war, anyone can relate to that. Plus, she wants to find love, plant a garden, and read books. She is representative of the people who helped heal the world's wounds after World War II.
