We've got some explaining to do. How can this story have no antagonists? So much bad stuff happens, right?

An antagonist is something or someone that opposes the progress of the protagonist. Wang Lung doesn't have any opposition. He gets everything that he wants. He gets a wife, he gets sons, he gets rich, and he gets another wife. You get the idea.

Bad stuff happens, but it's not because Sauron is trying to take over Middle-earth. Bad stuff just happens. Sometimes famines happen. Sometimes they don't. That's how life is.
