Character Role Analysis

Frank Carver

Virtually every character in the book has a beef with Frank Carver or somehow becomes invested in taking him down. Although our protagonist, Walter Moody, is (ironically enough) one of the few characters who doesn't have nasty history with Carver when the book opens, even he gets drawn into the loose association of people investigating Frank's involvement in murder, fraud, drug smuggling, and various other crimes (including the role most people think he played in the death of Anna's unborn child). So, yeah, Carver is definitely the villain/antagonist of this piece.
