• Sook knows Carver in China when he's a child. Carver is instrumental in the downfall of his family, although Sook doesn't know that immediately.
• When Carver leaves China for good, Sook begs to come with. However, Carver is clearly totally uninterested in having him around and done pretending that they're friends, so he does nothing to help Sook in Sydney when he gets into trouble.
• Around this time, Sook comes across evidence that Carver had used the Sook family business to run opium (and made it look like it was the Sooks' operation). Sook's father was executed without a trial as a result of Carver's deception. So, Sook vows to kill Carver.
• He and Carver are both in Sydney when Sook realizes Carver's role in his father's death, and Carver is staying at a brothel owned by Lydia Wells. Sook plots to break into the brothel, find Carver, and kill him.
• However, instead of breaking into the room where Carver is staying, he ends up in Jeremy and Margaret Shepard's room—and in the ruckus that follows, Margaret ends up shooting Jeremy.
• Sook hightails it out of there, but he's soon apprehended and charged with murdering Jeremy (because racism) and put on trial. He gets off when Margaret lies and says Jeremy committed suicide.
• Meanwhile, while Sook's on trial, Frank Carver is also arrested for trafficking and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Sook the has to bide his time for ten years waiting for Carver to get out …
• Upon Carver's release, Sook inquires at the prison to find out where Carver was headed and follows. However, the trail runs cold until one day he spots Carver in Hokitika.
• Carver then leaves town for a while, and Sook doesn't immediately find out when he returns. When Sook does hear, however, he puts his plan to kill Carver back into high gear.
• Again, though, he gets thwarted—just as he's going to bust into Frank Carver/Lydia Wells's rooms (the right ones this time), George Shepard shoots him to avenge Jeremy's death. His wife, Margaret (Jeremy's ex) had tipped him off to Sook's location.
