Character Role Analysis
Abuelita (a.k.a. Mama Luna)
The narrator's grandmother is a wise old woman who can do things like reshape the narrator's hands, heal her wounds after accidents and beatings, and grow amazing plants on her porch for everyone to eat. She's a refuge for the narrator; when her father goes nuts she can go to her Abuelita's to get some love. And insofar as Abuelita and the narrator are similar, she offers a sense of belonging to our main girl that she doesn't get at home. Luna means moon in Spanish, and just as the moon offers light in darkness, so, too, does Abuelita.
