Akaky

He's not much of a protagonist, but he's our protagonist. We follow Akaky from birth, to adulthood, to death, and even to the afterlife. There is no doubt that this is his story. The funny thing is, even though no one else notices him, pays attention to him, or respects him, to us he's the most important character. Actually, he's one of the most important characters in all of Russian literature. Maybe he doesn't have it so bad after all.
