Exactly how steamy is this story?

Some of the novel's pulpy covers from the 1950s make it look like you'll have to hide the book under your mattress, but for a book about forbidden love, the steaminess is fairly tame. All the sexual interactions between Carol and Therese happen off page, aside from a few lingering glimpses while one of the other ladies is in the bathtub. One of their most literally steamy encounters occurs in a shower, but that one also has the scene fade to black. Or maybe the camera fogs up too much for us to see what's going on.
