Carter Kane Timeline & Summary

  • Carter goes with his dad to London to visit his younger sister Sadie for one of their two yearly visits. This one falls over Christmas.
  • Sadie is being annoying as usual. Dad is being cryptic, and then he blows up the Rosetta Stone in the British Museum.
  • This summons Set, who kidnaps Julius in a box, and tells Carter that he'll be coming for him.
  • Forgotten Uncle Amos shows up and brings the kids to Brooklyn on a magical boat.
  • Carter doesn't sleep well as his soul (ba) travels to Phoenix, Arizona and sees Set planning to construct a giant red pyramid to consolidate his power and destroy most of the continent (along with his dad).
  • After Amos disappears and Bast recues Carter and Sadie from Set's minions, Carter finds himself facing a magician named Zia who is smart and hot and scary all at once.
  • Zia kidnaps—er, "rescues"—the siblings and takes them to magician headquarters in Egypt.
  • There, Carter faces a guardian ba who calls him "good king." He also meets the Chief Lector, Iskandar, who turns the kids over to Zia for training.
  • Carter stinks at summoning things at first, but he manages to manifest a falcon-headed warrior avatar. Cool.
  • The magicians turn on Carter and Sadie, and they flee to Paris, where Bast meets up with them.
  • For the first time, Carter makes contact with Horus, an Egyptian god who is sharing his body. Freaky.
  • Carter turns into a falcon in order to steal a scroll from the new Chief Lector's (Desjardins) house. A fruit bat chase ensues.
  • In America, Carter gets his butt kicked by magician thugs created by Thoth to spy on him and Sadie to make sure they aren't being ruled by their gods.
  • As they make their way to Phoenix, Carter relives a scene from Horus's life, when Horus got ambushed at the riverbank. He nearly has the life squeezed out of him by crocodile god Sobek, but Bast sacrifices herself to get the kids out of there.
  • Amos is suddenly un-captured by Set, and he guides the kids toward the red pyramid. Zia meets up with them, too (leading to more awkward flirtation with Carter).
  • In the showdown with Set, Carter finally merges with Horus, and together, they kick Set's butt in battle.
  • The Horus part of Carter's brain is mad when Sadie delays reading the banishing spell to Set, but then Carter sees why: in reality, Apophis has been manipulating Set to create enough chaos to rule the world. Oops.
  • Carter backs down so they can focus on the real problem—Apophis. But he also knows he has to find Zia: Iskandar hid her away, leaving a magic double in her place.
  • In order to avoid conflict with Desjardins, Carter and Sadie both undo the links with the gods they're hosting and put away the amulets that serve as links for later.
  • Carter is briefly united with his parents in the underworld, and he also refuses to take the throne of Egypt, even though Horus takes the throne of the gods.
  • Carter's learned that too much power too fast can be a bad thing. Carter stays with Sadie in Brooklyn in order to reopen the path of the gods and also look for Zia.
