Socrates Timeline and Summary

  • Socrates hangs out in Piraeus with Glaucon to see a religious festival.
  • On their way home, Socrates and Glaucon are stopped by a bunch of friends who want them to stay and see more of the festival, plus have a nice, long chat.
  • After some arm-twisting, Socrates and Glaucon agree and head over to Polemarchus's house.
  • At Polemarchus's house, Socrates chats with Polemarchus's father about old age and justice until Polemarchus takes over and debates some more.
  • Soon another guest, Thrasymachus, jumps in and argues with Socrates.
  • Then Adeimantus and Glaucon join in. They all begin to imagine an ideal city.
  • After discussing such things for a long time, Socrates tells everyone a story called the Myth of Er.
  • Rather abruptly, the dialogue ends.
