• Cam and his sister work out in the garden after he gets home from war. His family isn't sure how to treat him, since he's been gone for twelve years.
• When the war comes up, Cam's not sure what to even think about it. He doesn't get why they let him survive when everyone else died—he wants to understand, but for the life of him, he can't figure it out.
• Even though Cam's not around when Graceful and her family are chatting, we learn that he used to be betrothed to the young Fenister, but her dad broke it off after the war. Poor Cam.
• Ban and Cam start hanging out, even though Ban's family doesn't like the guy—they, like plenty of other folks, think he's hiding something.
• The two guys go swimming, hunting, and even steal some stuff together. (Gee, why doesn't Ban's family like Cam?)
• While they're spending time together, Ban asks Cam a bunch of questions about the war and Graceful and why Cam's so quiet about what happened on the battlefield.
• All the questions make Cam upset, and he realizes that he's really alone in the world. No one gets him.
• So Cam decides to run away to Upland. He's in search of answers about what happened to him during the war, and he's going to find them—one way or another.
• Through some flashbacks we learn that Cam was excited to go to war at first, but once he got there he didn't know what to do.
• At one point during battle he comes face to face with Lord Ryuu's son, Gyaar, but doesn't kill him. Why? Honestly, he's just too scared.
• More and more people die, and Cam starts to wonder what the war is even about in the first place—he doesn't understand the politics of it all.
• Then we get some more flashbacks, but this time from Gyaar's perspective. He tells us that he though Cam looked like his older brother when he first saw the guy, and when Gyaar finally had the chance to kill Cam, he didn't because he felt he owed the guy for sparing his life earlier.
• Back in the present, Cam stays with an Innkeeper once he gets to Upland. He meets a girl named Diido who is forced to sleep with soldiers because she's got nowhere else to go. Cam bonds with her and eventually has a fight with her pimp to get her free. Yay.
• Every day he goes to the castle to spy on Gyaar and his family—of course people start to notice though, so Gyaar eventually brings him in to ask him a couple questions.
• Gyaar and Cam bond over their shared memories of the war. They realize that even though they are from opposite sides, they are really not all that different. Gyaar gives Cam a job as his advisor, and even gives Diido a singing gig in the palace too.
• When Gyaar's parents start pressuring him to get hitched and have kids, he goes for Graceful, for political reasons—if they get married, there will be peace between Uplanders and Downlanders. Cam's a little jealous, but doesn't let Gyaar in on it.
• Cam starts getting closer to Diido, and thinks he might want to see his home again one day. He even writes to his sister Pin promising her he'll come home soon, just not yet.
