How It All Goes Down
Section 371
- They pass by another coastal city.
- The Man is having good dreams, which is a bad sign.
Section 372
- The Man has to stop and lean on the cart: "He spat a bloody drool" (372.1). The Man has to rest more and more.
Section 373
- They keep going. Either The Man is hallucinating or he's getting really spiritual as he gets closer to death: "He'd stop [. . .] and see him [The Boy] standing there in the road looking back at him from some unimaginable future, glowing in that waste like a tabernacle" (373.1).
Section 374
- They see some ice and trees. The Man wonders if in the world's final destruction it will "be possible at last to see how it was made" (374.1).
Section 375
- There's a lot of wreckage by the road.
Section 376
- They find a canvas bag alongside the road, which they can use to stow their blankets and food in. They leave the cart.
- It's winter.
- The Man thinks The Boy, holding his suitcase, looks "like an orphan waiting for a bus" (376.1).
Section 377
- They come to a collapsed bridge. The Boy wants to know what they're going to do. This question is obviously about more than just the bridge.
Section 378
- They walk up the beach and make camp. It starts to rain and they pull the tarp over themselves.
Section 379
- They travel inland but The Man is really slowing down. He has a huge coughing fit.
- After two more days of slow progress, The Man lies down and knows he won't get back up.
Section 380
- The Boy brings The Man some water. The Man eats half a can of peaches; The Boy won't eat the other half.
- The light seems to move with The Boy, and The Man says something really mystical and strange. The Man is dying.
