Sure, zoos can be places where children first start to wonder about sexual behavior: "Mommy, why are those two hippos playing leapfrog?" But Diane Ackerman isn't focused on that kind of animal behavior in this book. She doesn't even mention any animal husbandry, so to speak, before Antonina becomes pregnant with her second child. The Zookeeper's Wife is way more interested in the literal birds and bees than in any metaphorical ones.
