Character Role Analysis

Jane

Jane's about as clear a love interest as you can get—though luckily, she's not solely defined as "the girlfriend." (Yay, astrophysics.)

But when push comes to shove, she's pretty much in the gal pal seat, and when Thor makes the supreme sacrifice, he's basically doing it for her.

Heimdall and Agent Coulson

Heimdall's a smart cookie—you'd have to be if all you did was stare at the whole darn universe all day—and he's onto everyone's little reindeer games pretty quickly, which means both Loki and Thor have to take special care to get by him.

Luckily, he's still firmly on the side of Team Good Guy, and while he may challenge Thor from time to time, he's doing it more to test the big guy than really stop him.

Coulson's kind of the Earth-bound version of Heimdall, only with a lot more petty authority thrown in. He has his own agenda, and he's not sure whether Thor is friend or foe, so he makes the fallen god jump through all kinds of hoops to get what he wants.

But once he figures out the whole hammer thing (and what Thor's really all about), he cops to the mistake (sort of) and holds out his hand.
