  1. The Count of Monte Cristo
After your students read a novel by Dumas, they should definitely check out another one of his stories. The Count of Monte Cristo is just as exciting as The Three Musketeers with adventure, plot twists, and a character obsessed with revenge. The plot is a little more streamlined than the plot of The Three Musketeers but with the same amount of intrigue and vengeance. If your students enjoyed the adventures of D'Artagnan and company, they'll love The Count of Monte Cristo.

  2. When D'Artagnan Met Gulliver
Gulliver's Travels is one of several literary titles that Dumas name-drops in the text of The Three Musketeers, and it's not hard to see why. Both stories include several different quests and mini-episodes in the characters' lives, they both explore themes of lies, deceit, and double-crossing, and they both have characters who start their quests with a sense of adventure but end up somewhat miserable. Introduce your students to some great Swiftian satire with Gulliver's Travels once they've finished Dumas's tome about D'Artagnan and company.
