Character Analysis
Mrs. Harper, Joe Harper's mother, acts as a more conventional counterpart to Tom's Aunt Polly. When Tom and Joe disappear and are feared drowned, the two women share in each other's grief. Mrs. Harper does not share Aunt Polly's superstitions, however, and sets Polly straight when she comes to tell her about Tom's prophetic dream.
