The very last thing that happens in Tomorrow, When the War Bean is that Kevin leaves to drive Corrie—who's been shot—to the hospital. As they leave, Ellie thinks that she understands why Kevin turns the headlights on (22.55). Though she doesn't articulate why, we're thinking it's because Kevin wants any soldiers he encounters to know that he's not trying to hide from them. He doesn't want to get shot or have any extra trouble; he just wants to get Corrie to the hospital where, based on all the intel the teens have gathered, she should be able to get some much-needed help.
Everyone wishes Kevin good luck, and then Homer rallies everyone, saying, "Let's go home […] to Hell" (22.56). After so much uncertainty, the gang at least has a place to call home, and they are off to rest and plan their next adventure as guerillas fighting the invaders. With the fate of Kevin and Corrie up in the air, we'll have to stay tuned for the next book in the series in order to find out whether they make it to the hospital. Until then, consider our fingers crossed.
