Character Analysis
Dick Johnson is the youngest pirate. He's converted to the pirate cause by Long John Silver once they are all aboard the Hispaniola. However, he is inexperienced and weak. He offers up his Bible so that Tom Morgan and George Merry can hand Long John Silver a black spot with the word "Deposed" on the back – meaning that Long John Silver has been removed from his duty as pirate captain. But Long John Silver tells Dick Johnson that he has now drawn a curse upon himself by ruining his Bible. Dick, running a fever and generally hallucinating, really takes this prediction to heart. By the end of the novel, he seems to be dying of sickness. He is one of the three pirates left alive (barely) on the island when the Hispaniola sails away.
