Character Role Analysis
Tania
Miller dedicates the entire book to Tania, and even though he has a wife, this Tania has a real effect on him: "It is to you, Tania, that I am singing. I wish that I could sing better, more melodiously, but then perhaps you would never have consented to listen to me. You have heard the others sing and they have left you cold. They sang too beautifully, or not beautifully enough" (1.3). Word is that Tania was based on the French-Cuban diarist and writer of erotics, Anaïs Nin.
