Mehevi Timeline and Summary

  • Two villagers lead Tommo and Toby into the settlement, and Mehevi greets them, organizing a feast.
  • Seeing that one of the new visitors has a leg injury, he calls for a healer, and sits with him until the patient cries out in pain and the treatment must be stopped.
  • Mehevi shows Toby and Tommo to the hallowed ground, to the Ti, so that they may relax together.
  • When Toby asks whether he may go get help for Tommo's leg, Mehevi consents, but also sends young warriors to pretend to be Happars to force Toby to turn back. (Toby discovers the ruse, and doesn't.)
  • Mehevi leads a fifty-man battle against the Happar, with muskets and spears. His men sustain only minor injuries.
  • The chief explains the concept of "taboo" to Tommo, in his native language, but Tommo seems unable to understand.
  • While Marnoo is visiting, Mehevi must break up a conversation between the visitor and Tommo. They're speaking in English, and the chief has no way to know whether or not they are scheming against his wishes.
  • Mehevi lunches each day with the chiefs and Tommo, at the Ti.
  • As the people prepare for a festival, he tries to explain its meaning to Tommo, but still they cannot really understand each other.
  • The Festival of the Calabashes is upon the valley, and Mehevi is glad to see Tommo dressed up for the occasion.
  • Mehevi tries to get Tommo to fix an old musket, but the barrel is rusted through. Tommo must convince him it's a lost cause.
  • He ties a bit of braided plant fiber around Tommo's wrist, pronouncing him "taboo."
  • After a verbal alarm sounds, Mehevi and his men go to battle again with Happar, this time bringing back the bodies of their killed enemies.
  • After the victory, Mehevi and the chiefs conduct a private feasting day.
  • Another boat comes to the nearby shore, and Mehevi allows Tommo to go forward, thinking that with his injury, Tommo will be unable to make it to the beach. (Tommo does, though.)
