Character Analysis
Like Jimmy, the warrior Marnoo is "taboo," able to travel peaceably throughout the island. Unlike Jimmy, though, Marnoo is a native islander notable for his chiseled good-looks. We're told that this "Polynesian Apollo" has "matchless symmetry" (18.20). He also has freedom, thanks to his taboo. Plus, he's partially fluent in English—what a catch. Because of this, Tommo is able to communicate his desire to escape, and Marnoo is able to help make it happen, spreading the news of his captivity to Nukuheva.
Hmm...we notice both Jimmy and Marnoo have a hand in providing Toby and Tommo's escapes. What could Melville be up to here?
