• Toby, Tommo's shipmate on the Dolly, learns that Tommo will be escaping the ship and wants to join him.
• The two escape during a break at Nukuheva, and Toby leads the hike across the mountainous landscape.
• After Tommo sees a settled village where they might rest and eat some food, Toby engineers paths to descend from the mountain ridge, by roots and canes.
• Toby and Tommo encounter two native islanders. Trying to determine whether they are of a cannibal sort, Toby pantomimes the eating of man...to the islanders' confusion. They end up following them to the village anyway.
• When the hikers arrive in the village, the natives manage to get Toby's name right (unlike Tommo's).
• On their first night in the valley, Toby rests soundly.
• Toby and Tommo meet a few young women, who inspect them and get a little too close for comfort.
• Toby meets the head chief, Mehevi.
• When a local healer sets upon Tommo's leg and causes him lots of pain, Toby begs him to stop, and eventually he does.
• Toby and Tommo settle into life in the valley, still debating whether they'll be cooked and eaten.
• When, after a week, Tommo's leg worsens, Toby resolves to strike out and get help.
• Toby leaves the valley. He goes up the mountain, only to be attacked by the Happar, sustaining a head injury.
• Toby is carried back to the Typee settlement, feared dead, but he's revived and heals quickly.
• After taking a lone walk near the shore, he sees boats and returns to the house to tell Tommo he plans to accompany the islanders to greet the boats at the near shore.
• The two friends say goodbye. Toby promises to come back with help. It is the last time they'll see each other on the island.
• When Toby gets to the shore, he sees there's no boat, but there is Jimmy, talking to several Typee. Jimmy makes a deal to allow Toby to leave, saying that Toby'll be back soon.
• Toby and Jimmy hike through Happar land (where they stay briefly and peaceably), to Nukuheva.
• When Toby arrives at Nukuheva, he tries to find a boat to take him back to the Typee valley, to pick up Tommo—no dice.
• He's forced to sail away, abandoning his friend without meaning to.
