• Tommo signs up for service on the Dolly, under the purview of Captain Vangs.
• After six months, Tommo misses land and hates how the captain treats his crew, so he decides to escape.
• When the Dolly lands at Nukuheva, the sailors are given a day off, and Tommo heads for the mountains, taking his similarly sea-sick shipmate Toby along with him.
• Tommo trails behind Toby across the mountainous landscape and sustains a leg injury.
• The hike gets harder, and they're running low on food. When Tommo sees a settled valley, they decide to head for it.
• Tommo and Toby arrive in the Typee Valley, where they're welcomed, and given food to eat and a place to sleep.
• Tommo's leg worsens, and Toby leaves to get help.
• Tommo adjusts to life in the Valley, becoming close with his manservant Kory-Kory and his best island girl, Fayaway.
• In exploring the area, Tommo begins to realize that there are borders the natives prefer him to keep to. He may have gone from sea to land, but he's found himself captive again.
• Despite his captivity and the absence of Toby, when Tommo's leg gets better, everything's fine for a while.
• Three things happen in quick succession: an attempted tattoo, a preserved white man's head is found in a sack in his dwelling, and traces of a cannibalistic feast are detected at the village's hallowed land. With all of this, Tommo decides that it's time to escape.
• Tommo hears news of a boat and makes it, with some trouble, to the shore.
• Running from a chief and some of the islanders, Tommo makes it to the rowboat.
• Tommo strikes out at the chief that has reached the rowboat, plunging a boat hook into his neck.
• Tommo makes it to the ship, and eventually recovers and returns home.
• He writes the story of his Typee adventure, then right after it's published, he runs into Toby.
• He adds the note about Toby, and the circumstances of their reunion.
