Character Analysis
In a story filled with magic, you're going to need someone enchanting…and the nursery magic Fairy fits the bill perfectly. This Fairy appears at the end of the story to save the Velveteen Rabbit from certain death. She sure likes to cut it close.
The Fairy comes out of the flower that grew from the Rabbit's tear. She explains why she's there because watching a Fairy step out of a flower while you happen to be crying is kind of confusing:
"I am the nursery magic Fairy," she said. "I take care of all the playthings that the children have loved. When they are old and worn out and the children don't need them any more, then I come and take them away with me and turn them into Real."
"Wasn't I Real before?" asked the little Rabbit.
"You were Real to the Boy," the Fairy said, "because he loved you. Now you shall be Real to every one." (68-70)
Huzzah!
The Fairy is a bit of a deus ex machina in this story. She kind of pops up in the end to rescue the Rabbit from a grim fate when it appears all hope is lost. Just when we were wondering if all this Real business was, well, real, the nursery magic Fairy comes along and affirms it all with a kiss. The Rabbit is saved. Everyone is happy. Everyone is also probably crying. And we all understand the magic of love a little better.
