Albert connects with a young horse purchased by his father. He names the horse Joey.
Despite Albert's protestations, his father sells Joey to the military.
A few years later, Albert, now an army vet (as in veterinarian), is reunited with Joey.
Joey's on the verge of death from tetanus, but Albert nurses him back to health.
After the war, Joey is purchased by an old Frenchman, Emilie's Grandpapa, who gives Joey to Albert.
Albert marries his sweetheart, Maisie Brown, and he, Maisie, and Albert (along with Albert's now-sober father) live happily ever after in England.
